GRANDMA..WORLD’S BEST STORYTELLER..EVER!
It was a chilly winter evening with fluctuating voltages, a flickering lantern and a room full of loved ones.
With a blanket around my head, I impatiently waited on the bed for grandma to finish her chores and rule the customary primetime stories slot.
Nothing was out of her reach - tales of romance, adventure, suspense involving princess, knights, dragons, spirits and whatnot.
But that night was special. She pulled out an old album to tell real stories of our family with photographs of her much younger self, grandpa, her wedding, travels, uncles & aunts, my parents, my birthday and more.
Like a key to unlocking a memory, every photo brought tender reminisces to her as she time-traveled in her mind to tell me more about it. And, I marvelled at each of the pictures.
Like most nights, the power-cut seemed customary too.
She turned the simmering flame into a blaze of light, placed the lantern on the bedside table and continued.
Her storytelling was so compelling that Satyajit Ray, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Steven Spielberg and the like would take a bow. And by that time, uncles and aunts, who had already snuggled in to see those pictures, added to the discussion and celebrated the warmth of togetherness.
Enjoying all of this, grandpa, steadily rocking the chair a little distance away, smiled and said to me “now you know how beautiful your grandma is and why I married her”. Her eyes moistened and glittered with joy.
Thereafter, every time I visited her on holidays, she wanted me to bring a few photographs and tell her all about them.
In fulfilling her wish, I inadvertently learnt the importance of documenting life and how it brings people closer to each other.
Little moments often change life in a big way.
